Rock climbing at Breaks Interstate Park
Central Appalachia’s Hidden Climbing Haven
Rock climbing at the Breaks was first opened in 2016, when a group of experienced climbers from the Access Fund and the Central Appalachian Climber’s Coalition worked together with park staff and other natural resource managers to create the Breaks Interstate Park Climbing Management Plan. The group jointly developed a plan that balances protection of natural resources with access to high-quality traditional and sport climbing routes installed on hard, Appalachian sandstone. Climbers are required to review the park’s climbing regulations and complete a free waiver each calendar year. A link to the waiver can be found below:

Working closely with its non-profit partner, the Central Appalachian Climbers Coalition, the park has worked with top-notch route developers to install over 300 routes in 6 years, and the number continues to grow!
